From classical to lighter numbers; a concert by Soundarie and Thushani
View(s):Soundarie David Rodrigo will be seen in concert with Thushani Jayawardena next Sunday, June 23 as they present ‘Classically Different’ at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
It is the first time the two are doing a show together. The concert is titled Classically Different “because both Thushani and I are deeply rooted in Western Classical training – she the violin, and myself on the piano, and we both embrace this fully in our repertoire at the concert,” Soundarie told the Sunday Times.
The repertoire chosen will definitely have something special for all, Soundarie promises, “from the ardent classical lovers, to the not so classically inclined audience who are bound to enjoy some of our selections.”
“Our first half will be with the composers we both love, namely Greig, Rachmaninov, Kriesler. What is different is that we are also moving towards the lighter classical numbers, Sri Lankan numbers, an Indian fusion as well as pop with a classical twist to it.”
Soundarie adds that she has personally always admired Thushani as a passionate violinist. “We have over the last year or so, collaborated for a few events, and have enjoyed making music together. Those who have heard us together at these events have always come and spoken to us asking if we were performing anywhere else … Given that we don’t do regular performances together and both our lives have become busy with other musical and personal commitments, we thought it would be nice to present a concert together.”
An accomplished pianist and choral director, Soundarie is well known as the founder of Sri Lanka’s premiere female choral ensemble Soul Sounds and also went on to launch the Soul Sounds Academy. She has directed numerous shows and collaborated with many artists for concert recitals. She is the first Sri Lankan to be appointed as Representative on the World Choir Council Council for INTERKULTUR —the International Organisation that hosts several international choral festivals and competitions.
Thushani Jayawardena, a well-known face in the local pop music scene and on TV (Derana Dream Star and Sirasa Super Star Season Three), studied the violin under Ananda Dabare, her father Ashoka Jay-awardena and Professor Howard Davis from the Royal Academy in London.
She was first violinist of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka at the age of 12 (the youngest in the Orchestra at that time) and played her first violin concerto with the SOSL the same year. She retired from the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka as the Concert Master.
‘Classically Different’ is on Sunday, June 23 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7 p.m. Tickets priced at Rs. 5000, 4000, 3000, 2000 and (Balcony) 1000 are available at the theatre.
