Defending league and knockout champions St. Peter’s Colege got off to a flying start to their title defence campaign thrashing newcomers Thurstan College by a massive 112-0 in their opening match of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2024 at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

It was a massacre of the innocents as Thurstan, coming into the top division after a lapse of 12 years, had to just watch the Peterites going on the rampage. A brief shower that fell 10 minutes after the game commenced did not deter the Peterites from having things their own way as they chalked up 55 points before the short whistle was blown. They added further 57 points in the second half to cruise to an easy win. They scored their points through 18 tries and 11 conversions.

They began the scoring spree in the very first minute of proceedings through an unconverted try scored by centre Sithila Nimsara and from there on it was a rain of tries which came from second row Vishenka Silva, who went over for three more tries. Second centre Salith Gallage too was in top form as he went over three tries in this session while Sulaiman Riyas and Jehan Weerabangsa went over for one try each. Yuneth Shihara succeeded to boot over four of these before the short whistle was blown with the score on 55-0.

The second half was a repeat with the Peterites starting their scoring spree in the second minute with flanker Vihan Rusith going over for a try. From there onward it was another rain of tries coming from skipper and No.8 Dulaj Navodya, second centre Salith Gallage which was his fourth of the match. This was followed by second row Nethushan Manthusha, winger Praneeth Silva and centre Senuth Dinsara going for two tries each with Yumeth Shihara and Raul Peter booting over the conversions.
