A spark of light illuminated Mihintale over two millennia ago when Arahat Mahinda from India introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka. To commemorate this dawn, which symbolises freedom from darkness, ignorance, and attachment, the country comes alive with aloka poojas on Poson Poya Day. In keeping with tradition, Wijeya Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Sunday Times, holds its annual aloka pooja at the Thanthirimale Raja Maha Viharaya near Anuradhapura.
