A senior sailor of the Sri Lanka Navy Special Boat Squadron, Piriyantha Ratnayake (40) who died after a mishap during an operation to seize Indian poaching trawlers is missed by his family, relatives and friends.

A resident of Ibbagamuwa in Kurunegala, he was posthumously promoted to Fleet Chief Petty officer.

Hi wife, Nadeesha, told the Sunday Times that her husband was a brave person who never gave up.

“He loved his job and would have made any sacrifice for the job.”

“This is like a bad dream, I can’t even think of a life without him. We have two children, my daughter is 12 and my son is 6. My daughter knows that her father is no more, but my son doesn’t understand this.” she said.

A relative, Linton Wickramaratna, said it was a shock to hear of Mr Ratnayake’s untimely death. He added that Mr Ratnayake was a good swimmer and a diver. Mr Ratnayake was referred to as “Bintu” by residents in the area.

“Everyone called him “Bintu Putha” as he was very helpful person. He was born in Wahalkada and was brought up by his aunt from the age of three,” he said.

The late sailor joined the Navy in 2004 and was posted to the food section. However, as he was a good swimmer and a diver, senior officers recruited him to the Special Boat Squadron.
