A group of farmers conducted a deva pooja seeking punishment for the unauthorised persons who have excavated and damaged the rock near Kala Wewa. History records that the reservoir was constructed in the fifth century during King Datusena’s reign. The excavators have dug around 2 feet on the rock bed using equipment.

The location of the excavation site is near the Kala Wewa circuit bungalow. Farmers suspect that this operation has happened with the protection of the higher officials in the Mahaweli Authority, which took over the project some 56 years ago.

“We love this place. The Police has not investigated the matter so far. Around 2,500 farmers depend on this project. We request the authorities to arrest the culprits,” G M Wijeratne of the farmers association said.

“They have commenced a boat service here. Even the political authority in the area is connected to this plot. We will not allow these robbers to exploit this.”

“They have damaged the bisokotuwa which is the heart of the project. We cannot be silent. They may even damage the historical awkana statue,” farmer Jayalal Jayasooriya said.

“We live in turmoil. These historical places need protection. These excavators might damage the bund.”
