Navy seizes trawler with more than 191 kg of drugs and six suspects on board
View(s):A local multi-day fishing trawler carrying more than 191kg of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (ICE) was intercepted on the high seas by the Navy about 120 nautical miles (about 222 km) off Colombo on June 24.
Six suspects on board were apprehended in the operation conducted by the SLNS Nandimithra.
Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera inspected the seized narcotics at the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour on Wednesday.
Officers seized 48.88kg of heroin in 45 parcels and 142.184kgs of crystal methamphetamine in 137 packages. The estimated street value exceeded 2,572 million rupees.

The suspects, ranging from 25 to 68n years were from Chilaw, Iranawila, and Thoduwawa.
Following the arrest, the Navy handed over the narcotics, suspects, and the trawler to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further investigations.
For this year so far the Navy has seized more than 1000kg of narcotics with a street value of over Rs. 15,782 million.
The Navy has urged the public to report any information related to drug smuggling, especially individuals posing as fishermen, to the Navy or law enforcement authorities.
