Memoirs of a General and Ambassador to be launched
View(s):Twenty-four years after he retired as Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Gen C. S. Weerasooriya is releasing his memoirs. Titled, Duty & Devotion: The Unfiltered Story of a General & Ambassador, it tells the story of his life woven into the story of Sri Lanka from independence up to the end of the Eelam War.
The book published by Vijitha Yapa will be released on July 7.
In its five sections, the book deals with the optimism of newly independent Ceylon, and how despite its potential, the country gradually slid into unrest and violence at the hands of irresponsible and shortsighted leadership. In this personal account, the General speaks, among many other things, of the pressures and difficulties of life on the frontlines, and the toll on the personal lives of military personnel.
Former President, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in the foreword to the book, states, that the General “displayed extreme honesty during his military service – a rare quality in his profession in Sri Lanka.” She also states that the book gives the reader “a perspective rarely seen in mainstream media.”
“This is a must-read for political and civil society leaders, to understand the complexity that military leaders face in deciding what is right and wrong in conflict situations” writes MP Eran Wickramaratne while Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy, former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, calls the General “a Renaissance Man – someone who has shone in many fields.”
Priced at Rs 3,500, Duty & Devotion: The Unfiltered Story of a General and Ambassador will be available from July 8 at all Vijitha Yapa outlets and online
