Planters appeal to SC, get them brief relief

Sri Lanka’s Planters Association has obtained temporary relief from paying estate workers the minimum wage of Rs.1700 following the staying of the gazette issued by the government to make this payment.
The Supreme Court on Thursday issued this interim injunction by a majority decision to stay the gazette that called estate owners to pay the workers a minimum wage of Rs.1700.
In this respect, the Court of Appeal – where a connected case was heard – has been asked to expedite the argument and carry out hearing the main matter in this respect.
At present workers are paid a minimum of Rs.1000 and although the Planters Association has stated repeatedly their inability to make this payment, Elkaduwa Plantations, part of the state run estates has already agreed to pay these wages.
Issuing the interim injunction the Supreme Court gave provision for the plantation companies too, to be allowed a hearing about the possibility of making the payment.
The 21 RPCs appealed to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal rejected their request to put the payment on hold.
The RPCs had sought the court intervention regarding the gazette notification saying they were not consulted in the process of increasing the wages.
The order was issued by a three-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices Gamini Amarasekara, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Janak de Silva.
