An Elizabeth Moir School Scholarship student, 17 year old Okitha Karunadhara, reached the Semi-finals of the prestigious International Public-speaking Competition organised by the English Speaking Union (ESU) in London during May this year. Okitha beat off stiff competition from about 50 countries participating in the competition, and was runner-up in his group, narrowly missing a spot in the Finals. Previously, Okitha had won the National Public Speaking Competition 2024, granting him this opportunity to represent Sri Lanka.

Mrs Elizabeth Moir MBE, Head of School, stated, ‘We are so proud of Okitha for this wonderful achievement. Now only is he a talented actor and debator, winning many awards, but now he has won the ultimate prize of representing his country at an international event.”

During the competition week, Okitha made a number of speeches, both planned and impromptu, on a wide range of topics such as ‘There is nothing either good or bad, thinking makes it so’, ‘A great leader can change the world in an instant’, and ‘The more I practise the luckier I get’. Okitha said of his experience, “I feel so fortunate in having been able to participate in this competition. The skills I developed and the friends I made created memories that will last a lifetime.”

The English Speaking Union of Sri Lanka, founded in 1981 by the late Dr. T.P. Amerasinghe, is affiliated with the English Speaking Union International whose patron is His Majesty King Charles III. The vision of ESU is to continue to be recognised for its expertise in providing people, both in the UK and internationally, with the communication skills, confidence and networking opportunities to realise their potential.
