Entrepreneurship promoted in schools

Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha announced the creation of entrepreneurship circles in 3,000 schools as part of the first phase aimed at fostering school-level entrepreneurs.

Children will be able to select their career path at the age of 14 under the new transformative education system, he said, adding that schoolchildren should receive instruction and knowledge about entrepreneurship.

According to the Minister Premajayantha, children in Grade 9, around the age of 14, will have the chance to talk with their parents and decide on their future career path under the new system.

In addition, career counselling will be offered starting from Grade 6 as part of this approach.

The Minister said that no nation can remain isolated in the current world due to scientific and technological advancements, and this programme will provide the groundwork for the nation’s ability to create the basis for the production of essential goods that can be produced in the country.

“We should attempt to produce the goods that can be produced in this country in a manner suitable for the foreign market in accordance with high international standards,” he said.

Research and innovation, according to the Minister, would lay the groundwork for that, and the educational system ought to do more to assist this initiative.

Even while Sri Lanka’s university system produces useful discoveries through research, these concepts are rarely refined to the point where they can be employed in real-world situations or produced at the necessary levels, Minister Premajayantha noted.

He pointed out that there should be a connection between education and innovation to facilitate the emergence of new goods through research that are appropriate for both domestic and international markets.
