Shakespeare Centre relives the legacy of Bard of Avon in Sri Lanka

The special General Assembly of Shakespeare Centre with the High achievers’ awards ceremony was held recently at the Sinhala Cultural Institute (Sudharshi) in Colombo.
The evening also marked the presentation of five year strategic development plan from 2024 to 2028, launching of the website and YouTube Channel www.shakespearecentresl, and media conference.
The chief guest of the evening was former Speaker Sri Lankabhmanaya Karu Jayasuriya, Prof. G. L. Peiris, film star Jeewan Kumaratunga, Wasantha Nawarathna Bandara, Prof. Mudiyanse Dissanayaka and Dr. Clarence Kumarage. Founded by Obinamuni Gamini de Silva, Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka conducts variety of programmes including plays to promote Shakespearean Theatre among Sri Lankan Students and to provide students with an opportunity to present and develop their knowledge and skills. Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the task of promoting Shakespearean theatre in Sri Lanka.
Over the years Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka has conducted various events including competitions in different categories including stories, quiz, drama, oratory, essay writing and translations. These competitions were to test students in their knowledge and understanding of Shakespearean theatre, Shakespeare’s characters and scenes in dramas. It also conducts drama workshops to promote Shakespeare’s dramas and produced dramas and films.
