Two Lankans among 22 Indian poachers
View(s):Among the 22 Indian fishermen who were taken into custody recently for engaging in illegal fishing in northern waters, two Sri Lankan-origin individuals are facing separate legal charges.
When the case came up before the Kayts Magistrate on Friday, the Court was told that the two Sri Lankan nationals left the country during the height of the war in 1997 and have been sheltered at the Mandapam refugee camp in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. The two Sri Lankans were on board an Indian mechanised bottom trawler and were working as daily labourers when their vessel was taken into custody on June 22 by the Navy for engaging in poaching in northern waters along with two other vessels.
The Fisheries Department filed charge sheets against Indian fishermen under the Regulation of Foreign Fisheries Fishing Boats Act, while the two Sri Lankans are held under arrest for engaging in fishing without a legal fishing permit issued by the department.
Arrested Indian fishermen are normally charged during their brief detention and released after the court hands them two years of rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years. Those who commit repeated offences are given jail terms.
According to department sources, all the arrested fishermen except the two Lankans are to be released by July 18.
