Tamil people across the Northern and Eastern provinces mourned the death of veteran Tamil leader R. Sampanthan this week, marking his decades-long active political life and his role for the Tamil cause.

His party, Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi, organised pocket meetings in its offices and civil society outfits to remember his role as a political leader who spoke up for people’s rights.

The veteran leader’s funeral procession will leave his residence at Post Office Road, Trincomalee, today afternoon and make its way through Trincomalee town towards the Trincomalee Hindu cemetery for final religious rights.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to attend the funeral.

On Thursday, the late nonagenarian’s mortal remains were taken to Jaffna by air and placed at the ITAK head office on Martin Road, Jaffna. Thereafter, the coffin was placed at the S.J.V. Chelvanayagam Memorial Auditorium for the public to pay their last respects.

On Friday, the remains were taken to Trincomalee to his residence.

In a message recalling memories of closely working with the late ITAK leader, Northern Provincial Council Chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam, said, he remembered how Mr. Sampanthan told him at a commemorative event to mark the death anniversary of the late S.J.V. Chelvanayagam that he was instrumental in his early entry into politics abandoning a lucrative legal carrier in the 1950s.

“He commanded respect and dignity not only locally but internationally as well by voicing the rites of Tamil people and was always hopeful of reaching a long lasting solution for the ethnic conflict within his lifetime. We have lost one of our impeccable leaders today,” Mr. Sivagnanam said in his message.
