David Pieris athletes excel in Singapore

Competing against over 1200 athletes from 22 countries at the SMTFA International Masters Track and Field Championships 2024 held in Singapore. The David Pieris Group (DPG) team brought home 24 medals, including 12 gold, nine silver and three bronze.

The DPG team, comprising eight athletes, were part of a 32-member Sri Lankan contingent that qualified for this prestigious event based on their performances at the Mercantile Athletic Meet 2023.

Among the medal winners of the David Pieris Group team were Gayesha Dissanayake, Gayani Wasana, Sisuru Fernando, Mihirani Perera, Kalpani Fernando, Damith Madushan, Kasun Shyamal and Malshi Fernando. Gayesha Dissanayake won four gold medals in the Hammer Throw, Triple Jump, 4x100m and 4x400m events and a silver medal in the Long Jump event. Gayani Wasana accounted for four gold medals in the 100m, 400m Hurdles, 4x100m, and 4x400m events. Sisuru Fernando claimed three gold medals in the High Jump, Long Jump and 400m Hurdles events while Mihirani Perera also won three gold medals in the Long Jump, 400m Hurdles and 4x100m events in addition to a silver medal in the Hammer Throw. Kalpani Fernando won a gold, silver and a bronze medal each in the 4x400m, Triple Jump and High Jump events respectively. Damith Madushan won a gold in the 800m and a silver medal in the 1500m while Kasun Shyamal claimed three silver medals in the 400m Hurdles, 4x100m and 4x400m events. Malshi Fernando claimed two silver medals in the 100m and 200m events.

In addition Waruna Udawatte also from DPG who represented the Mercantile Athletic Federation as Team Manager, also won two silver medals in the 4x100m Relay and 4x400m Relay in addition to two bronze medals in the 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles.
