School athletes to leave for Dhaka for South Asian School Combat Games

A team consisting of 10 schoolboys and 10 schoolgirls will leave for Bangladesh next Tuesday (9) to participate in the South Asian School Combat Games 2024, which will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 10 to 17.

The Taekwondo School Association, known for offering annual travel opportunities to school children, has chosen the champions of the Sri Lanka School Sports Taekwondo Tournament 2023, co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Sri Lanka Schools Taekwondo Association, as well as the winners of the Sri Lanka School Taekwondo Tournament 2023.

Additionally, athletes who secured gold and silver medals in the tournament organised by the Ceylon Schools Taekwondo Association have been selected for the upcoming trip abroad. W.P.G Karunaruwan, the Principal of St. Mary’s College, Kegalle, is the current President of the Sri Lanka School Taekwondo Association.

Chatura Pradeep Athukorala of Ananda College, Colombo, will serve as the manager of the Sri Lankan team for the upcoming tournament in Bangladesh. S.M.K. Bandara will oversee the players, while Piyumi Nelummika will be responsible for the girls’ team. The coaching staff includes V.K. Herat, B.K.A.D. Hemachandra, and U.A.M. Ranjeeva and P.S. Patabandi. Team leaders for the players will be U.W.H. Tharanga from Badulla Uva Vidyalaya and Sithuki Niyangama from Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Kottawa.
