A proposal to allocate Rs 202 million from the National Transport Commission’s (NTC) fund to launch 500 new ‘Sisu Sariya’ services this year was green lit by the Cabinet this week (11).

The NTC launched the Sisu Sariya service in 2005 with the goal of giving schoolchildren a dependable bus service with a discounted fee system.

1,537 routes are operated by private and Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses that transport students in all of the country’s districts.

Approximately 100,000 pupils are served by transportation services every day.

Since students only need to pay half of the bus fare under this project, the operators will get a subsidy payment to cover their loss up to a maximum of 110 kilometers.

Economically disadvantaged parents and students who are unable to afford private transportation due to rising fuel prices have increased demand for the Sisu Sariya service.

In light of this, the Cabinet accepted Minister of Transportation and Highways Bandula Gunawardena’s proposal to utilise funds generated by the NTC’s to launch additional bus services this year. (NA)
