A three-year-old child standing on a chair and drawing water from a tank to bathe fell into it and drowned, a coroner’s court was told.

When the inquiry came up at the Elpitiya base hospital this week, the child’s mother, 32-year-old Ruwini Menaka, told the coroner that she believed the child had fallen into the tank while bending over to take water. The tank had four feet of water.

The mother said her elder son jumped into the tank and managed to take his brother out. The child was then rushed to Elpitiya Base Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The postmortem examination was held by Judicial Medical Officer Dr. R.M. Ranepura, and the inquest was conducted by Mr. Wijenayake Shantha.

An open verdict was returned pending autopsy reports.
