Beauty of the ballpoint

Today is the final day of ‘Wondrous Images’ – award-winning ballpoint artist Mangala Madanayake’s art exhibition at the Colombo Public Library.

Forty years after he first began experimenting with ballpoint pens, Madanayake has held as many as 28 one-man exhibitions at leading galleries and written a book detailing his technique, step by step and experiences. He believes there is little difference between the paintings done with ballpoints and those done with oils, acrylics and watercolours, citing the millions of lines that go into each work.

My dream is to popularise the technique of ballpoint art and have it included in the school curriculum, he says.

The exhibition, which is free of charge, is on today.
