Four new meet records set; St. Joseph’s, Mahamaya, Lyceum Wattala take lead

Triple champion M.F. Mohamed of Zahira College continued his form to set three new meet records in the Breaststroke events on the penultimate day as St. Joseph’s College, Mahamaya Girls School and Lyceum International School, Wattala maintained the leads in their respective categories on the penultimate day yesterday of the 49th All-Island Schools Aquatic Championship being held at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex in Colombo.

Four new meet records were established yesterday, as Mohamed went on to establish new records in the Boys Under-18 Breaststroke 50m and 200m events. He clocked 30.51 seconds in the Boys Under-18 50m Breaststroke event and his timing in the 200m Breaststroke was recorded as 2 minutes and 29.09 seconds. On Friday he shattered the Under-18 Boys 100m Breaststroke record.

Binura Thalagala of Lyceum International School Wattala set a new meet record in the Boys Under-18 Freestyle final after finishing at 4 minutes and 16.49 seconds. He renewed the previous record of 4:22.34 set by Dilanka Shehan in 2017.

Nawanjana Siriwardana of Lyceum International School, Wattala renewed a 12-year-old meet record in the Girls Under-20 Breaststroke event, with a timing of 37.04 seconds to better the previous record of 37.63 seconds set by Gihara Amarasinghe in 2012.

St. Joseph’s College, Mahamaya Girls School and Lyceum International School, Wattala maintained the leads in their respective categories on the penultimate day yesterday of the 49th All-Island Schools Aquatic Championship being held at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex in Colombo.

Defending champions St. Joseph’s are well ahead in the Boys’ category while Mahamaya GS have taken the lead of the Girls’ category. Lyceum Wattala are well ahead of the rest in the Combined Schools category, by the end of the fourth day.

St. Joseph’s are way ahead in the Boys’ category with 218 points followed by traditional rivals St. Peter’s (141), Ananda (131.50), Royal (103), Lyceum Nugegoda (86), Trinity (80), Lyceum Wattala (75), Lyceum Panadura (66), S. Thomas’ (51) and Lyceum Gampaha (46).

Mahamaya GS has accumulated 188 points to lead the Girls’ category, followed by Ladies College (159), Lyceum Nugegoda (143.50), Lyceum Gampaha (116), Museaus College (108) and Visakha Vidyalaya (106).

In the Combined Schools category the top four slots are being occupied by swimmers from Lyceum International Schools. Lyceum Wattala are on top with 218 points followed by Lyceum Gampaha (162), Lyceum Nugegoda (135), Lyceum Panadura (124) and Royal Institute (78). Today is the final day of the meet.
