Huge entry fee forces fans out at FIBA Asia Cup

The Sri Lanka Basketball Federation has attracted heavy criticism for charging school children Rs. 600 each to attend matches of the FIBA Asia Cup Under-18 basketball tournament which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday. This decision led to disappointment among the children as they were expected to pay for entry. Consequently, the tournament suffered from low attendance, notably evident when Sri Lanka played against India.

The federation’s action could discourage young basketball enthusiasts from engaging with the sport, as they might opt to watch matches from home rather than attending in person. Spectator involvement is crucial for promoting basketball, and by imposing these charges, the local sports body may hinder the growth of the sport by alienating potential future players.

To benefit the sport, it would be more constructive for the federation to focus on promoting basketball rather than solely generating revenue. Encouraging spectator participation and cultivating interest among school children is essential for the sport’s development and nurturing the next generation of basketball players.
