Sri Lanka claim two golds at Western Asia Youth Rapid Chess
View(s):Sri Lanka claimed two gold medals at the Western Asia Youth Rapid Chess Championship, which kicked off at the Citrus Hotel in Waskaduwa earlier this week. Chamuditha Sasen Bandara Herath of Maliyadeva College, competing in the Under-10 Open, and Thisarindu Induwara of Royal College, competing in the Under-14 Open, pocketed gold medals in their respective categories recording identical scores of 5.5 points out of 7.
Others who earned medals for Sri Lanka were Eleesha Warnakulasuriya Fernando (2nd place, U-8 Girls),
L.M.H.T.I. Bandara (3rd place, U-8 Girls), Dulein Thenula Ambagahawaththa (2nd place, U-8 Open), Risali Lohasna Jayaweera (3rd place, U-10 Girls), Chenitha Sehas Dinsara Karunasena (3rd place, U-10 Open) and Sethumlee Devhara Palliyage (2nd place, U-12 Girls).
The tournament was contested across seven rounds with the participation of over 300 players from 11 countries under six age categories. Kazakhstan players came on top with four gold medals in the rapid segment while India won three gold medals. Sri Lanka and Iran won two gold medals apiece. The West Asian Youth Chess Championship will continue in the standard and blitz formats as Sri Lanka hopefully anticipates more medals.
