Reevaluating NVQ necessary: President

Sri Lanka can be established as the regional centre for the development of human capital, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said.

He emphasised reevaluating the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) to bring it in line with globally recognised standards, such those in Australia.

Speaking at the Sri Lanka Human Capital Summit 2024 held on Thursday (18) at Temple Trees on the theme “Unlocking Sri Lanka’s Economic Potential by Building a Future-Ready Workforce,” President Wickremesinghe pointed out the importance of fostering, utilising, and enhancing human capital.

The Government intended to approach Australia for support in bolstering and updating Sri Lanka’s educational infrastructure, he said, adding that in order to have a strong education system, BIMSTEC countries must work together.

President Wickremesinghe said it was necessary to make structural adjustments, promoting reforms and fortifying the institutions of training and education.

Given that many of the people who left the country had technical and vocational qualifications, it was important to give the vocational and technical sectors top priority.

Earlier on Wednesday (17) at the opening of the Student Parliament of Buduruwagala Maha Vidyalaya in Monaragala, President Wickremesinghe pointed out the need to create a cutting-edge educational system that integrates contemporary technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition to requesting financing from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for these reforms, President Wickremesinghe is expected to approach UNESCO for support in a broad modernisation drive for Sri Lanka’s education system.

The event saw 96 members of the Student Parliament in attendance. (NA)
