LRC accuses plantation companies of land grab; oversight committee advises quick action
View(s):By Niranjala Ariyawansha
Thousands of acres of state-owned plantation lands have been encroached upon by plantation companies over the years and are being used by them, the Land Reforms Commission (LRC) has alleged.
These lands have also not been assigned either to the State Plantation Corporation or the Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB).
LRC Director General Liyanage Pathmasiri told the Sunday Times that legal action would be taken to reacquire those lands.
He said that he appeared before the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis on July 11 to inform it of the encroachment.
The LRC chief said committee chairman Gamini Waleboda advised that steps be taken immediately to reclaim the land illegally acquired by plantation companies.
The DG said that apart from these state plantation lands, about 56,000 acres of land were being illegally occupied by people who had put up houses, and as a result, the LRC had only about 7,000 acres of land without any issues.
