The Sri Lankan High Commission in Bangladesh is in constant touch with some 50 Sri Lankan students who are stuck in their university hostels and rented homes as Bangladesh imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed the army with disruption of communication channels following violent protests by youth this week, a spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry said.

Niluka Kadurugamuwa, the Ministry spokesperson, told the Sunday Times that Sri Lanka High Commissioner Dharmapala Weerakkody wrote to universities and educational institutes in Dhaka and Chittagong, where a majority of Sri Lankan students are studying, to ensure their safety and well-being during these difficult times.

“High Commissioner Weerakkody is also constantly in touch with both students and their parents back home as well,” the spokesperson said.

The nation saw widespread protests staged by youth and students this week, clashing with security personnel and pro-government activists over the reintroduction of reservation in government jobs for families of Bangladesh independence war veterans.

Over 100 people have died in the unrest and many injured, according to news agency reports.

Meanwhile, 300 Indian students returned home yesterday by crossing the border, Indian media reported.
