Two fires broke out on Friday in the Badulla district. One was in the Lunugalama forest reserve, and the other was in a pinus cultivation close to Haldummulla town. About 60 acres were destroyed altogether.

The Lunugalama forest reserve fire damaged two wooden electricity poles placed to suspend 33000 volt electrical wires, causing power outages in areas nearby.

Officers of the Diyathalawa army camp, Haldumulla divisional secretariat officials, Haldummala Pradeshiya Saba officials, the police, Wildlife Department officers, and Disaster Management Department officials joined the villagers to douse the fire in Haldummulla.

Badulla district secretary Prabath Abeywardena told the Sunday Times that people were setting fire to forest areas, and the prevailing dry conditions were conducive for the fires to spread. He said some set fire to forest reserve areas and shrubland areas to hunt animals, while others did it for fun.

Mr. Abeywardena said a special operation was on to arrest people who set fire to forested areas.
