The Sri Lanka Tamil Women’s Union will celebrate the platinum jubilee of Kalalaya (Temple of Dance) School of Dance & Music founded by the Union 75 years ago on September 1, 1948, with ‘Natya Saga’ – a progamme of dance forms of the country and the unity of communities.

Choreographed by ’Natya Kalamani” Dr. Nirmala John, the Bharata Natyam teacher at the Kalalaya, the grand show will take place on Sunday, July 28, at the Bishop’s College Auditorium, Colombo 3.

The Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Tamil Women’s Union was inaugurated 115 years ago during colonial times by a group of dedicated and cultured women of Colombo to encourage the Tamil community to preserve and promote the Tamil language, literature and the arts.

The annual ballets and dance performances put on the boards by Kalalaya were cultural events which enhanced the organisation’s  reputation as a premier institution for dance in Colombo. Kalalaya, reached its heyday under famous gurus like Kamala Johnpillai, Sukhundu Dutt, Shesha Palayakara, the Sunderalingams, Neela and Satyendra.
