FMSSL conducts FIM Marshal Training Programme

The Federation of Motor Sports in Sri Lanka (FMSSL) successfully conducted the FIM Asia Marshal Training Programme recently at FIM Asia Proride Safety Riding School, near Pitakotte, to educate the local stakeholders of motorsports in the country.

The FMSSL took the initiative to seek advanced expertise from Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), to assist local stakeholders of in officiating and technical aspects in conducting a motorsport event. This was initiated by FMSSL following the unfortunate incident that took place at the Fox Hill Super Cross event, where eight lives were lost.

During the day-long session, the FIM educators covered topics such as Marshal Training Programme: A Cornerstone for Safety, Securing Funding and International Support, Future Plans and International Engagements, Renewed Focus on Drag Racing and Reviving Motorsport in Sri Lanka.

The session attracted 63 participants from various clubs across Sri Lanka, who took extra interest to learn the updated international standards of motorsports, and marked steps towards improving safety standards and enhancing skills of marshals.

“The training, which received overwhelmingly positive feedback, will now be an annual event, underscoring FMSSL’s commitment to safety. This initiative is particularly crucial following the Fox Hill scenario, which brought racing to a standstill and highlighted the urgent need for rigorous training and safety measures,” stated Shane Gunawardena, the President of FMSSL.

By initiating this programme, the FMSSL has secured funding from both FIM Asia and FIM, and accomplishment that signifies the proactive and effective approach of the current administration in securing resources essential for the sport’s growth and development.

FMSSL is set to host the next FIM Asia board meeting in Sri Lanka, a major opportunity to showcase the country’s potential in the international motorsport arena. In collaboration with Feroz Omar and Proride, FMSSL is planning a Tri-Nation event and aims to secure an Asian round of the Junior MX Championships. These initiatives are part of a strategic effort to put Sri Lanka back on the racing map.

“There is a renewed focus on drag racing, and FMSSL plans to elevate its profile in Sri Lanka. The involvement of international trainers and FIM support are critical in this endeavor, ensuring that the sport adheres to the highest standards of safety and professionalism. Our extensive experience, including pioneering role in Southeast Asia, adds significant value to these efforts,” Gunawardena added.

The FMSSL is experiencing a renaissance under the new regime headed by Gunawardena. The Director General of the Sports Ministry has commended the FMSSL’s performance, reflecting the new administration’s dedication and effectiveness, although there has been no local funding allocated towards motorsports development.

“The FMSSL is dedicated to reviving and advancing motorsport in Sri Lanka. With robust leadership, international collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to safety and excellence, the future of motorsport in Sri Lanka looks promising,” stated Malinda Karangoda, the Secretary of FMSSL.

Following the period of decline, aftermath the fatal Fox Hill Super Cross event in April, attributed to mismanagement by unscrupulous leaders of race organising clubs, Gunawardena emphasised on a renewed commitment to professionalism and safety. After lengthy discussions with FIM and FIM Asia officials, FMSSL revealed of its initiative which aims to standardise safety protocols and elevate the quality of racing events across Sri Lanka.

Gunawardena stated that four international marshals, with extensive experience in both Formula 1 and MotoGP, led the training, as the programme covered essential skills for managing both gravel and tarmac events, ensuring a higher standard of race management and safety.
