Sri Lankan authorities are convinced about the potential of blockchain technologies and are looking positively at it, top officials said.

“Central Bank officials had a positive outlook on the work currently carried out by us and expressed their support for the initiative,” Kavinda Kariyapperuma, Managing Director, CoinCeylon, leading Sri Lanka’s Blockchain Technology, told The Sunday Times Business recently.

This was at the launch of the first Intersect and CoinCeylon Hub in South Asia in partnership with IntersectMBO, discussing the transformative potential of blockchain technology emphasising the importance of proper education to curb the activities of bad actors and ensure the technology is used to build beneficial products and services the right way.

Blockchain is the technology that enables the existence of cryptocurrency (among other things).

Mr. Kariyapperuma said that the Central Bank officials discussed the transformative potential of blockchain technology and its ability to drive educational and economic growth in this region while using blockchain technologies in the right way to enhance existing systems and services.

“Through our hub, we are committed to educating and empowering our members, ensuring they are well-equipped to contribute to the evolving landscape of blockchain technology.”

Key features of the Hub include monthly town hall (meetings), localised content translation, and regular meetups, both physical and virtual, to facilitate knowledge sharing and networking. By integrating these elements, the Hub aims to build a robust and informed blockchain community in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Kariyapperuma added that with the Hub’s launch, Sri Lanka is set to become a pivotal player in the global Cardano network, contributing to the blockchain’s growth and governance.

“As the first hub in South Asia, following successful launches in Japan, Latin America, and Africa, we are proud to join the global network of Intersect hubs with many more planned around the world in the third quarter of 2024. Our hub aims to foster transparency, inclusivity, and active participation, serving as a collaborative platform for local developers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts to engage with the global Cardano ecosystem.”

This launch marks not just a milestone for CoinCeylon & Cardano but a significant leap forward for the entire blockchain community in Sri Lanka.
