Nelna Agri Development recently hosted US Ambassador Julie Chung at its sprawling 650-acre, mango plantation which has 50,000 mango trees in Wandama, Wellavaya situated in the Monaragala district.

This visit emphasised Nelna’s fascinating diversification from their two-decade legacy of poultry to pioneering mango production; a visionary approach which led to an unprecedented and rapid growth transforming Nelna into the leaders in mango production and exports in Sri Lanka, the company said in a media release.

Nelna’s state-of-the-art mango plantation exemplifies the company’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and innovation. Discussions during the visit, touched on the critical role of value-addition within the fruit sector, alongside enhancing productivity through innovative technologies and smart irrigation practices.

Ambassador Chung stressed the absence of fresh fruit imports, notably mangos, from Sri Lanka to the US and the economic benefits of opening the US market to Sri Lankan mangos. Known for their exotic flavour profile, Sri Lankan mangos cater to the growing demand from health and taste conscious consumers worldwide.

She expressed appreciation for Nelna’s pivotal role in promoting sustainable agriculture and economic growth in Sri Lanka. Spanning two plantations, Nelna’s operations extend to the intermediary and dry zones.

The company’s focus on producing export-oriented mangoes has paved the way for significant growth, with plans to export 1.2 million mangos per annum to countries such as the US. In addition to mangos, Nelna offers a variety of fresh fruits including papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, and banana, while durian and jackfruit will be added to the range. Nelna exports to Maldives, Singapore, Dubai, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, UK, France and Russia. About 60 per cent of their mango produce is for the local market, with the remaining 40 per cent earmarked for export.

Under the company’s Founder and Chairman, W.G.E.G. Nanayakkara’s leadership this transition was driven by his entrepreneurial spirit and boldness.

Today, Nelna is led by the second generation of this esteemed family establishment, with Ms. Punya Nanayakkara – Managing Director – Nelna Agri Development (Pvt) Ltd. steering the agro venture, with groundbreaking innovation whilst ensuring the continuance of her father’s visionary approach.

Asanka Nanayakkara, Managing Director,
Nelna Farms (Pvt) Ltd., takes on the helm in the other business verticals.
