The Education Ministry is addressing two major issues that have an impact on the teaching profession, Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha said.

The MoE will analyse these concerns and find solutions, the Minister said, allowing for prompt pay raises.

“The Public Service Commission Secretary has consented to quicken this procedure, and by next Wednesday, we will forward the required instructions from the MoE to the provincial authorities,” he said.

Minister Premajayantha added that the Government has successfully solved the teacher shortage by assigning 16,000 teachers at the national and provincial levels, despite economic challenges.

The Minister made these remarks at a press briefing held on Monday (22) at the Presidential Media Centre.

Presenting a summary of recent initiatives implemented by the MoE, Minister Premajayantha said that the Chinese Government has announced that it will supply school uniforms for Sri Lankan students in 2025, while the distribution of school books to local stores for that year began on Monday.

Additionally, arrangements have been made to provide lunch to 1.7 million students in all schools, excluding the main national schools.

Meanwhile, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will contribute USD 85 billion to the Ocean University of Sri Lanka.

Development activities at other universities, previously stalled due to a lack of foreign aid, have resumed, benefiting both the university system and the construction industry, according to Minister Premajayantha.

Plans are also in place to introduce 2,700 advanced smart boards to schools as part of an initiative to digitise the entire school network.

Moreover, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to provide USD 400 million for teacher training, added the Minister.
