New education system from next year
View(s):The education transformation system under which new syllabuses will be introduced for Grades 1, 6 and 10 will be implemented with effect from next year.
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said after a successful pilot project this week the transformation will come into effect in January. The next stage of the transformation will be for Grades 2, 7 and 11 which would be implemented in 2026 after the pilot project comes into effect next year.
He said the full transformation project is due to be completed in eight years and thereby all syllabuses will be changed by eight years.
Director General of the National Institute of Education (NIE) Prof Prasad Setunga told Education Times that the key feature in the transformation would be the reduction of the number of text books used by a student.
The Primary section will be receiving an ‘Activity book’ while Grades above 6 will receive module books, he said.
The module books will have web links which could be used by the students even at home, while lots of inquiry based learning, project based learning, activity based learning and problem solving based systems will be introduced.
He said under the transformation, arts subjects will be introduced to the Primary section as integrated aesthetic education covering the subjects of arts, music and dancing. These subjects will be compulsory for Grades above 6. -DWI
