President seeks Elon Musk’s assistance with educational challenges
View(s):Sri Lanka hopes to grant billionaire business tycoon Elon Musk the required licenses to address the nation’s educational issues and support schools in need, President Ranil Wickremesinghe says.
“The Government intends to furnish him with the requisite licenses to bolster these endeavours in Sri Lanka by the end of this month,” he said addressing the 106th College Day celebrations of Bandaranayake College in Gampaha on Wednesday (24).
Citing how the Government was compelled to restrict education funding for the past four years, the President emphasised the need to modernise the educational system with new technology and increase investment in education.
He highlighted the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms and the innovative creation of drones by college students as key developments.
In addition to recruiting more teachers, funding is needed for these efforts, President Wickremesinghe noted.
Sri Lanka also plans to implement a strategic plan over the next decade aimed at creating job opportunities for its youth within the country, rather than having them seek employment abroad, he continued.
The President underlined that Sri Lanka must advance from its existing status as an impoverished country and warned that the Government’s large investment in education would be compromised if this strategy is not carried out.
The President outlined his initiatives to improve the school system’s compatibility with emerging technology and reaffirmed that the required funds will be set aside for this goal.
