The latest technological revolution in the world cinema, IMAX is now here in town.  Scope Cinemas, one of Sri Lanka’s leading cinema chain operator dedicated to revolutionising the cinematic experience in the country, opened the first ever IMAX theatre at Havelock City Mall from July 26.

The much anticipated movie experience proved it success with a complete sold out for the very first days ahead. “This eagerly anticipated launch promises to bring an unparalleled level of audio-visual immersion for Sri Lankan moviegoers, marking a milestone moment for entertainment in the country. IMAX is renowned globally for its cutting-edge technology and unique film presentation capabilities,” Scope Cinema stated.

‘Giving Sri Lankans the opportunity to have a revolutionary cinematic experience is something we’re very passionate about. Thus, we have been working very hard to get ready for the IMAX launch and make sure everything is perfect’ said  Naveed Cader – Executive Chairman at Scope Cinemas.

Well-known presenting world class cinema experiences to Sri Lankan moviegoers Cader described the importance of joining with IMAX.

‘We’re very excited to take things up a notch by partnering with IMAX to bring our customers a new, world-class, premium, large-format movie experience right here at home in Sri Lanka’ he added.

‘We are on the right time and the right place and we are selling the tickets at the right price as well’ said Thushan Meemanage, Director and Chief Executive Officer, Scope Cinemas

‘For instance, within few hours of making the tickets available online, most of the show times got fully booked, which means our patrons are fully ready to come and watch movies in IMAX cinemas’ Meemanage explained.

He also said that those who glued to the TV to watch cinema need to come to IMAX cinemas to get an immersive experience.

‘This will also lead to a market growth of film industry’ Thushan added. Thushan assured that the international standard and the quality would be maintained with the showing of blockbuster movies at IMAX.

‘We are the first one to start the international standard cineplex in the country.  So if you look at Colombo City Centre, we have been maintaining the same quality throughout the year’ he said.

The IMAX®️ Theatre at Scope Cinemas Multiplex – Havelock City features with Laser – a next-gen laser projection system – delivering the most advanced theatre experience. Coupled with IMAX Precision Sound for breath-taking audio and IMAX®️ Immersion by Design seating, with stadium-style seating for clear viewing at every seat, IMAX would make most immersive cinematic theatre experience in the world today.

According to Preetham Daniel – Vice President – Theatre development at IMAX – India, S.E.Asia,Korea, Aus and New Zealand who was in Colombo for the grand opening of IMAX, the new cinema would drive people to the theatres instead of sticking them to their living rooms or phones.

‘Your television in your house has come a long way over the last 5 or 7 years or 10 years.  I agree, why does anybody want to step out of home in the comfort of your house? But, IMAX is actually the answer for it because what we provide in an IMAX auditorium is not something you can replicate in your house. You cannot get a size of a screen that we can provide in an IMAX auditorium’ Daniel told TV Times. According to Daniel the journey to introduce IMAX to Sri Lanka took nearly five years. He said Scope Cinema is equipped with a laser 4K system and 12 channel sound system, the best of what we can provide as an IMAX technology.

“There are over 1700 IMAX theatres around the world with 44 IMAX theatres in India, 39 in Malaysia and 17 and more are to be opened in many countries,” Daniel described.
