Absence of police chief poses security concerns

The stalemate in appointing an acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) continued yesterday, but a long-term impasse could have implications in a series of other police functions, a senior official said yesterday.

He said there were a series of other functions, including giving directions on operations, signing documents, and calling for tenders, and they require the directions of the IGP or the acting IGP.

The official explained that though they could manage for a short period of about a week, they would need direction from the President or the government on how they could move ahead with their duties.

A senior police officer said the absence of an IGP or an Acting IGP has complicated the situation, as also the post of DIG (Administration) has fallen vacant.

The DIG (Administration) post had fallen vacant after SDIG Nilantha Jayawardena was sent on compulsory leave last week in connection with the investigations over the Easter Sunday attacks.

The officer explained that it was unprecedented that both top positions in the police were vacant.

He said the department could face difficulties without an IGP or Acting IGP.

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told the Sunday Times that the absence of an IGP or Acting IGP could be a security concern and arrangements should be made for an appointment.
