A Sri Lankan food delivery employee who was shot and injured in Kuwait for allegedly delaying delivering a food order returned to the country claiming that he had not received any justice over the incident.

Lakshman Tilakaratne, 46, told journalists at the Bandaranaike International Airport that though the incident had occurred on January 11, so far he had not received any justice, and therefore decided to borrow money from his employee and return to the country.

He said on that particular day, the restaurant he was working at had told him around 4.45 am that there was an order to be delivered and the order had been already late. He had driven one of the three vehicles available to the house to deliver the food, but the person who had placed the order did not respond to the calls.   A few minutes later the person who placed the order had arrived in a vehicle and pulled up close to his vehicle. He drove closer, put his shutter down and shouted in the native language ‘get out’ and fired at him.

Tilakaratne said that he could not drive back, and called a colleague and got himself hospitalised.

Scarred for life

A month after the incident he was taken to the Police and hospitalised again.

His case was taken up on June 6 and though the case was due to be taken up at 9.30 am the embassy officials took him there at 11.30 am. The case was over by that time and the lawyer was unable to say when the case would be taken up again.

‘As my wife was not well, I thought it was no use to remain in the embassy and decided to return. I borrowed 100 dinars from the restaurant where I worked and decided to return home,’ he added.

‘I may have to start begging to maintain my family now,’ he said before returning to his village in Rajanganaya.
