Saman Devale God’s emblem stolen

A priceless emblem of the Saman deity, said to be wrought in gold, has been stolen from the Saman Devale in Kandy.
The emblem is carried in the annual perahera held each year in Alawatugoda.
Alawatugoda Police confirmed the theft in the early hours of Thursday (25) morning.
This devale was built by King Walagambahu (109 BC), and the sannasa of the King was lost in the 1818 rebellion. There are two statues inside the Devale of God Vishnu and God Saman.
It is recorded that the old devale and the vihara had been burned down by British soldiers returning from Trincomalee.
Alawatugoda devale in ancient times and even now is a place of sanctity.
The Basnayake Nilame of this devale joins the annual Kandy Esala Perahera.
Since of late there had been friction between the villagers and the Basnayake Nilame.
A vidane of the devale who was in service last confirmed that the God’s emblem were in gold.
Alawatugoda Police are conducting inquiries.
