Sumanthiran calls on presidential candidates to disclose how they would tackle corruption
View(s):Addressing a press briefing in Colombo on Friday, ITAK MP M.A. Sumanthiran said all major Presidential candidates are promising to eradicate corruption but don’t say how they would fulfil this pledge. ITAK MP representing Batticaloa Shanakiyan Rasamanickam also emphasised this point.
“We plan to set up a common public platform where we invite all three main Presidential candidates to come on board and discuss these issues of how they are going to resolve the major issue of corruption,” he said.
“We all know that those Rajapaksas who are supporting him (President Ranil Wickremesinghe) are highly corrupt. Even if he is re-elected, we do not believe that the President will get rid of the corruption,” Mr. Sumanthiran said.
“Sajith Premadasa was with the UNP for a long time and many of them are still with him and they are also corrupt. Thirdly, Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the National People’s Power at one time showed some files and claimed that they were files on corrupt government. But information on those files is yet to be made public. People are suspicious of how these leaders are going to get rid of this major issue of corruption,” the MP said.
Meanwhile, the MP also stressed that his party is not willing to field a Tamil common candidate as other political parties in the Tamil National Alliance entered into an agreement early this week with civil society outfits to field a common candidate.
