The funeral of veteran socialist Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne took place yesterday at the Borella cemetery.

He passed away on Thursday while undergoing treatment at the Colombo

National Hospital.

After graduating with first-class honours as an electrical engineer from the University of Ceylon, he went to Cambridge University under a Commonwealth scholarship to obtain his doctorate. He began his political career in 1970 with the Ceylon Sama Samaja Party (CSSP).

Dr. Karumaratne was a prominent left-wing politician and co-founder of the Nawa Sama Samaja Party (NSSP). He later formed the New Left Front (NLF).

His political journey was marked by various events, and despite the challenges, he remained a fierce critic of government policies and a defender of democratic principles.

A large number of politicians, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe, paid their last respects to Dr. Karunaratne at a private funeral parlour in Borella.
