Voting under fear: EC issues guidelines

View(s):

The Election Commission has published procedures to be followed by those who have a reasonable fear of their inability to cast the vote at the assigned polling stations.

A voter who is reasonably fearful that he will not be able to cast the vote at the given polling station due to the prevailing situation in the area may request to be facilitated to vote at another polling station.

The procedure is introduced under the provisions of Section 119B of the Presidential Elections Act, No. 15 of 1981, as amended by the Presidential Elections (Amendment) Act, No. 16 of 1988.

The relevant application forms can be obtained from district election offices, and they must be forwarded to the Election Commission head office in Colombo before August 1.
