Soul Sounds shines once again on global stage
The World Choir Games, one of the largest choral competitions worldwide, offers a grand stage for choirs to showcase their talents. For ‘Soul Sounds’ headed by Soundarie David Rodrigo, participating in this prestigious event was not just about the competition, but also about spotlighting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage on a global platform.
And shine they did, winning two Gold medals in the Gospel, and Folklore and Indigenous Music categories at the recently concluded Games in Auckland, New Zealand. A staggering 11,000 participants from around the world took part in the World Choir Games.
The folklore category required an authentic representation of culture and folk music, and Soundarie says how fortunate she was to collaborate with the renowned Ravibandu Vidyapathi whose expertise helped them craft a compelling medley that told the stories of Kuveni and Pathini. Each element in this item, from costumes to local drums to the singing, was a unique celebration of our culture.
Soundarie’s choirs are familiar with winning gold – having carried away three golds at the World Choir Games in Austria in 2008. Yet, she says how each edition of the Games offers a unique experience shaped by its host city. The time in Austria offered a different experience, while Auckland presented its own charm. With new as well as seasoned members participating this time, the dynamics of the group was also different, as well as the passage of time between the different editions making each experience ‘unique and incomparable’.
However, their journey was far from smooth as Soundarie faced the challenge of raising funds. Talking of the lack of resources to nurture the young talent in Sri Lanka and the lack of support, she is deeply grateful to her sponsors including the President for coming forward to make it possible for Soul Sounds to represent the country at the World Choir Games.
From coordinating rehearsal schedules to choosing the repertoire, there were many steps to overcome. Yet seeing everything come together to an international standard made their victory all that more special. It was hours and days of hard work and commitment, she reiterates. The choir marks a double milestone this year – 20 years of choral music in Sri Lanka. Thus, this experience becomes far more poignant and one to always be remembered, Soundarie adds.
Participating in such a global event also reaffirms the exceptional talent present within Sri Lanka paving the way for future generations, Soundarie states with pride. With perseverance and talent, Sri Lankans can shine on the international stage. The recognition of the arts and culture become effective tools for soft diplomacy. Through such events, Sri Lanka is connected with the world, which paves the way to displaying our nation’s cultural richness, she feels.
Currently in Bali for the Bali International Choral Festival with the Soul Sounds Academy choirs as well as 25 young soloists, Soundarie believes that keeping children focused on music and its benefits is essential in a time that social media and distractions are eating into the lives of their generations. Seeing them focus and handle stress, work as a team, build confidence, and manage their time successfully brings a far greater reward to this Director than a medal ever could.
