Dons annihilate hapless Sri Sumangala
D.S. Senanayake College delivered a spectacular performance in their Dialog Schools Rugby League game handing Sri Sumangala College a massive defeat by 76-10 at Havelock Park yesterday. The hosts led 43-7 at halftime and displayed their dominance throughout the game.
The Dons scored 12 tries, eight conversions and a penalty to amass their 76 points, while Sri Sumangala could only manage a converted try and a penalty for their 10 points. The match kicked off with D.S. Senanayake taking an early lead in the third minute. Winger Janindu Wijeratne capitalised on an intercept to score the first try, which he converted to make it 7-0. Wijeratne added another try in the 11th minute, converting it himself to extend the lead to 14-0.
Prop Omika Bogahawatte scored the third try in the 15th minute, and Wijeratne’s successful conversion brought the score to 21-0. A penalty kick soon after increased the lead further. Fullback Mohamed Sabeer added another try in the 18th minute, making it 26-0.
Sri Sumangala got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute with a try by flanker D. Rajaguru, which was converted to reduce the deficit to 26-7. However, D.S. Senanayake continued to dominate, with hooker Praveen Lakmal scoring near the left post and Wijeratne converting to make it 33-7. Lock Lankesh Wickramasinghe added another unconverted try in the 32nd minute, pushing the score to 38-7.
Before halftime, fullback Sabeer scored his second try, although Wijeratne missed the conversion. With that the Dons led 43-7 at the break.
After the resumption, D.S. Senanayake continued their relentless assault. Hooker Lakmal scored his second try in the 39th minute, converted by Wijeratne to make it 50-7. Prop Bogahawatte added his second try in the 44th minute, followed by another in the 49th minute, which was converted by Wijeratne, extending the lead to 62-7.
Winger Wijeratne scored again in the 56th minute, and with his conversion, the score reached 69-7. The final blow came in the 64th minute when flyhalf Rasindu Bandara scored a try, converted by Wijeratne, making it 76-7. Sri Sumangala managed a consolation penalty which was put over by fullback Samarakoon, resulting in a final score of 76-10.
