India has agreed to increase the amount it is giving for a project that will upgrade the facilities used by schools in the plantation industry by two-fold.

The Indian Government increased the amount from Rs 300 million to Rs 600 million due to increasing costs, the Department of Government Information said.

This week, the Cabinet of Ministers green lit a proposal tabled by Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha in order to complete the paperwork and obtain the increased funding.

The funds will be applied to an infrastructure improvement project that will raise the standard of living in 9 government-designated plantation sector schools.

As per the High Commission of India, these comprise 6 schools located in the Central Province and 1 school each in the Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern Provinces.

The project’s implementation was approved by the Cabinet in June 2019.

The acting High Commissioner of India and Education Ministry Secretary exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project in February 20, 2020.  (NA)
