The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), which is the professional body for chemists in Sri Lanka, offers higher education opportunities in Chemistry through its educational arm, the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS). Recently, with the hope of providing future opportunities to those who decide to pursue a career in the industry, the Institute organised a job fair for the graduates of CCS, IchemC, and its current students of 3rd and 4th years, with representatives from Macksons holdings.

Macksons holdings is the parent group of several companies related to the field of chemistry, including Macktiles, Multilac and Macksons paints. This invaluable event included a session of awareness about the industry with a brief introduction about the industrial opportunities to chemists in Sri Lanka, followed by details about the Macksons holdings and their group of companies; mainly the Multilac, Macksons paints and Macktiles. Further, the representatives stated the opportunities these companies offer to chemists and the qualities that a fresh graduate should possess to develop a stable career as a chemist in the industry. This session was followed by a round of formal interviews. After shortlisting, these interviewees are expected to be recruited to Multilac and Macktiles companies for internships and junior executive positions.

The event was graced by the Dean of CCS, Prof. Chandani Perera, Senior lecturer, Dr. Ranmal Gunathillake and the Teaching Assistants of CCS. The Head of HR of Multilac, Mr. Mohomed Fowsan, Head of QA/QC of Multilac, Mr. Naveen Edirisinghe, Senior HR executive of Macktiles, Ms. Kaushika Ranaweera and HR executive of Multilac, Ms. Manodya Kariyawasam attended the event representing the Macksons holdings. The job fair not only helped students and fresh graduates to gain knowledge and obtain direct internship and job opportunities in the industry, but also helped them in getting an exposure to the industry and facing a formal job interview.

The Institute of Chemistry hopes to organise many such events in future to guide their students and graduates to develop their careers and achieve higher feats as chemists, while continuing its excellence in providing quality higher education opportunities in the field of chemistry in Sri Lanka.
