The “Suraksha” student insurance programme, which was discontinued in 2022 owing to the economic crisis, has been revived.

All pupils attending government schools would therefore receive insurance coverage for a maximum of three years from the Education Ministry (MoE).

Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha said on Thursday (1) that all students enrolled in government schools, all government-approved private schools, and special education institutions would be covered by the Suraksha Sisu Rakshanaya scheme for three years.

The MoE and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation signed an agreement on Thursday to execute this insurance coverage, during which the Minister made these remarks.

Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara and Chief Operating Officer of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Priyantha Perera signed the agreement.

The MoE has set aside Rs 7,112 million for this endeavor, the minister said.

The insurance scheme provides coverage of up to Rs 300,000 for in-patient treatment in government or private hospitals, Rs 20,000 for out-patient care, and Rs 1,500,000 for critical illness benefits.

Additionally, payments from accident insurance include Rs 200,000 in event of a total permanent disability, Rs 150,000 under a permanent partial impairment, and between Rs 25,000 and Rs 100,000 in case of a temporary disability.

Minister Premajayantha added that, students from families with life insurance policies and an annual income below Rs 180,000, or those enrolled in the “Aswasuma” programme, will receive payments of Rs 75,000 per student if a parent or legal guardian passes away.

The maximum amount allotted per demise is Rs 225,000, and all of the students in the family receive an equal share of this sum.

Students will receive a digitised card for this insurance, added the Minister.
