The University Grants Commission (UGC) is to upgrade equipment of State-run universities and higher educational institutes at a cost of Rs 10 billion.

UGC Chairman Prof Sampath Amaratunga told Education Times that they are in the process of raising funds from donors for the project in addition to part of the funds coming from the Treasury from the next budget.

He said that the objective was to have upgraded equipment to ensure students are able to capitalise on having the option of studying with new equipment.

Prof Amaratunga said the Standing Committees of the universities had discussed the matter of the need to upgrade the available equipment where they had pointed out that the non-availability of upgraded equipment could have an impact on the undergraduates as well.

Some of the equipment were over 25 years old. Prof Amaratunga said that after the project is launched, they would conduct a survey on the impact of the upgrade.

All faculties in the 17 State-run universities and 19 other higher educational institutes will benefit from the project. (DWI)
