The 100th anniversary of Das Buddhistische Haus in Berlin, also known as the Berlin Buddhist Vihara, was commemorated at Temple Trees yesterday.

The highlight of the celebration was the launch of the book titled 100 Years—Das Buddhistische Haus. The publication, compiled by the German Dharmaduta Society, features a collection of articles that explore both historical and contemporary perspectives, drawing material primarily from Sri Lanka and Germany, as explained by Senaka Weeraratna, Co-Editor and Honorary Secretary of the Society.

The ceremony began with remarks from Ven. Olande Ananda Thera, who shared insights into the history of the Vihara and the Society.

German Ambassador Felix Neumann praised the event as a reflection of the German society’s values of diversity, inclusivity, and tolerance. He expressed his happiness at witnessing a collective effort to advance the principles of loving-kindness and compassion, which resonate deeply with the teachings of the Buddha.

Prime Minister and Chief Guest Dinesh Gunawardena reflected on the historical significance of the Berlin Buddhist Vihara during his address.

A commemorative stamp was unveiled in honour of the anniversary by Prime Minister Gunawardene, Speaker of the Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene, Post Master General Ruwan Sathkumara, Deputy Post Master General Thusitha Hulangamuwa, and Philatelic Bureau Director Lanka de Silva. The stamp designed by Isuru Chathuranga is priced at 25 rupees.

The launch was marked by religious observances conducted by the Chancellor of Colombo University, Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera, and Ven. Panadure Chandaratana Thera.

Printed by Neo-Graphics, the book is available at its publisher Vijitha Yapa, and is priced at 7,500 rupees.
