The Government has put in place contingency plans to evacuate Sri Lankans in Lebanon and other countries in the region in case of escalation of the hostilities in the area, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said yesterday.

“The MFA and the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment are working together to ensure the safety of Lankan workers and repatriate them if the need arises,” Mr. Sabry told the Sunday Times.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday advised Sri Lankan nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Lebanon as tensions in the region continue to escalate following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran. Several international airlines have suspended flights to Israel over fears of an Iranian attack on Israel after Mr. Haniyeh’s killing on Wednesday.

More than 6,000 Sri Lankans are working in Lebanon, many as domestic workers, while close to 20,000 Lankans are employed in Israel as caregivers and in the agricultural sector.

Minister Sabry said President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed two committees to monitor and recommend measures to address any direct or indirect impact on Sri Lanka’s national security and economy due to the developing situation in the Middle East.

These include measures to repatriate
Sri Lankan workers. The Sri Lankan embassies in Beirut, Tel Aviv and other capitals will coordinate such measures if and when the need arises.
