Returning officers were invited to the Election Commission office yesterday for a briefing on the preparations for the upcoming presidential election, Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake told the Sunday Times.

“We mostly discussed how to carry out polling-related activities even during adverse weather conditions. The election could be held during a rainy season, and therefore there could be flash floods, landslides, and other disasters. In such an event, there must be a plan B; that was one of the key points of the discussions,” he said.

The returning officers were also issued instructions on the conduct of polling booths, transportation of staff, carrying out inspections, and taking action against abuse of property.

Mr. Ratnayake said the briefing largely comprised the usual basic instructions issued during elections. It was held to remind the returning officers of the procedures.

He said that at such meetings they would discuss matters such as nominations, circulars to be issued, and related matters.
