Govt-EC standoff over Suraksha show
View(s):A standoff between the Government and the Elections Commission is afoot as to whether to go ahead with a ceremony, ‘Suraksha,’ the insurance scheme for schoolchildren, at the Presidential Secretariat next Tuesday with the attendance of Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.
President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake had sought clearance from the EC but was requested to postpone the event till after the presidential election. In a letter, EC Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake acknowledged that the programme was an important one for schoolchildren but said the conduct of the event at the Presidential Secretariat would amount to promoting a candidate and therefore could come under criticism from various parties.
However, Minister Premajayantha wants to go ahead with the ceremony on the grounds that he is not a candidate for the upcoming elections.
The Suraksha scheme was suspended for two years due to a lack of funds and has been renewed with the intervention of the Education Minister.
Government sources asked why the EC allowed nurses to attend in uniform and teachers to turn up at recent rallies of the NPP presidential candidate.
