Kap ritual takes place ahead of perahera

The commencement of the Kandy Esala Perahera began at the Aluthnuwara Dedimunda Devale premises with the ‘Kap‘ ritual where a suitable tree was cut for distribution to the four devales in Kandy at 4.10 am today.
The silver axe was handed over by the Basnayake Nilame of Maha Vishnu Devale and the Basnayake Nilame of Aluthnuwara Devale Mahendra Ratwatte, to the ‘Wannaku Rala’ (a lay official) of Dedimunda Devale to ceremonially cut the tree to be taken in procession to Kandy for the distribution to the four Devales so that they may in turn plant the cuttings at the four devales to commence the Kandy Esala Maha Perahera.
The cutting is brought from Aluthnuwara on a tusker, followed by dancers and the Basnayake Nilame, covering a distance of nearly 20 kilometres. They are expected to reach Kandy by 5 pm for the distribution rituals.
